Boomaroo Nurseries was recently recognised for continuing business excellence as the recipient of the 2020 Geelong Business Excellence Award for ‘Medium to Large Business’.

The Awards are the oldest running business awards programs in the country, only continuing in 2020 thanks to a digital livestream and the persistence and dedication of organisers.

Boomaroo Director Nick Jacometti presented the award for ‘Medium to Large Business’ by award sponsor Lyon Construction.

The program celebrates the most creative, innovative and thriving businesses in a region that is home to one of Australia’s largest populations outside of major cities. An extensive range of local businesses and business leaders were acknowledged for their commitment, passion, resilience and determination.

“It was inspiring to hear of so many significant achievements at a difficult time for business. These awards showcased the resilience of our entire business community. ” said Boomaroo Director Nick Jacometti.

“This achievement is a credit to the entire Boomaroo team as it reflects their achievements, hard work and dedication across all of our business areas.”

On top of winning the award for ‘Medium to Large Business’, Boomaroo were also recognised as finalists in a further five award categories: ‘Innovation and Research & Development’, ‘Sustainability’, ‘Health and Wellbeing Promoting Workplace’, ‘Safe and Healthy Business’ and the overall ‘Business of the Year’ category.

Boomaroo was scored highly by the judging panel against each of the assessment criteria,  highlighting the following key achievements:

Innovation – this area continues to be a driver of business growth and investment to continue to meet the needs of Boomaroo’s customers. Boomaroo celebrated the launch of its expansion project in Southbrook, Queensland – a facility that is fully automated and the most advanced of it’s kind in the Southern hemisphere. Other achievements  included the development of organic production capabilities, continued focus on science-driven outcomes through laboratory testing, growing data capture and visualisation initiatives and a large scale customer focussed digital communications project.

Sustainability – a commitment to this area across the business was underlined by the January 2020 release of the Boomaroo Sustainability Policy linking the importance of Environmental, Social and Financial sustainability across all business operations. Supporting this was the continued investment in solar power, capable of providing up to 25% of Boomaroo’s power needs at our Lara site and water recycling, meeting up to 40% of our water needs. Further business improvement decisions were made relating to the transition to a hybrid sales vehicle fleet, and a more sustainable approach to product packaging, chemical use, integrated pest management, waste reduction and environmental advocacy.

Customer Service – Boomaroo continued to their considered approach to Customer Service investing in the way their team is trained and equipped to engage with customers, improving digital support such as through its online Grower Portal, and backed by a quality management system underpinned by ISO9001 and HACCP certification. Alongside this, Boomaroo played an active role within the industry, sponsoring key events and initiatives such as the AUSVEG VIC Schools on Farms pilot program and AUSVEG Women in Horticulture.

People, Culture & Safety – Boomaroo’s focus on employee Health and Wellbeing was commended noting the implementation of stringent safety protocols, staff training program and welfare support. Boomaroo fosters a high level of diversity within the workplace and a strong commitment to social responsibility, supporting a wide range of organisations at the local, industry and broader community level.

Governance – Boomaroo’s established strategic planning cycles and governance structures ensured the business was able to proactively respond to the challenges presented by COVID-19 to provide the highest level of protection to team members and the best possible outcomes for customers and supply chain partners in a fast-evolving situation.

The Judges formal comments noted that “Innovation was strongly presented as a key driver across the business, with staff encouraged to find solutions to day to day issues across the business,  significant investment in technology and the creative use of it, the drive to find creative solutions for more sustainable options as well as the development of equipment to create new markets and improve the performance of the product.”

Boomaroo were nominated for the awards by local business partners Geelong Manufacturing Council, an organisation with whom we have shared a long relationship.

Beyond the recognition from the local business community, the award reflects the ongoing efforts of Boomaroo to deliver high-level service to their customers whilst reinforcing their continued focus on Innovation, People, Business Sustainability and Environment.

We thank our customers for their ongoing support, which has been critical in achieving this recognition.
